We are welcoming Meg of Our Misadventures
How & when did you get into digital scrapbooking?
I was always into graphic and web design, and sometime during my junior year of college I discovered a digiscrap site when trying to find some commercial use web design graphics. After that I started googling away, and discovered the Blog Train Blog and found myself traveling from site to site and getting hooked!
If you could be any character in fiction whom would you be?
Tara Holloway from the book series by Diane Kelly. She’s the “Annie Oakley of the IRS” — a special agent in their criminal investigations division, who somehow always seems to find herself in weird situations where she needs to fire her Glock. I can really relate to her character, crazy things are always happening to me!
OR… Samantha from Foyle’s War, another fictional tomboy in law enforcement. Like her, I like helping others and doing what’s right. She’s always getting herself into trouble for it, usually because she puts her own life or reputation on the line, and I’d like to think I’d do the same if I were in the same situations!
PC or Mac? What program do you use to design?
Mac. I have to use Windows for my “day job” and it drives me insane. I never have a problem when I work on my mac! For designing I use Photoshop CS5 🙂
Where do you get your inspiration when designing a digital product?
Paper scrappers! Have you looked around the galleries at Studio Calico? Those scrappers floor me with their ability to use physical products and create amazing works of art. I’ve always been a mess with scissors. In the 5th grade I wrote an amazing History Day project where I had interviewed local survivors of the Japanese Internment Camps, but even though I agonized over my display board for days… it still looked terrible. So I totally lost to someone who was able to tame their pieces of construction paper. ANYWAY… because I’m a wreck when it comes to physical scrapping, I try to replicate that style and current trends in my templates.
What is your favorite part of being involved in the digiscrap community?
The community! I have made so many amazing friendships through digiscrap. Someone is always willing to help you, with no questions asked.
When you are not designing what are you up to?
I have a small business processing and typing real estate appraisals, I volunteer for the Michael J Fox Foundation and my local Parkinson’s Disease support group, and I also run Real Life Scrapped. When we’re actually able to get out of the house and have some fun — my husband and I love to have fun up in the Sierras exploring. Riley, our dog, goes with us — but she would prefer we left her at Hume Lake to be fawned over by all the visitors there, she’s not so much into the hiking and exploring 😉
Sweet or salty? Wine or chocolate? Beach or ski vacation? Coffee or tea?
I love them all, but if I had to have one or the other… salty, chocolate, beach, and tea!
What is the primary source of your inspiration? Where do you go, or what do you do, to rejuvenate?
Paper scrappers. I browse Pinterest a lot and online galleries for paper scrapping. I’ll see a page that has a unique way of cutting the papers, or how the journaling was done around the main cluster. I take different things I liked from multiple different layouts to come up with my own, and turn it into a template!
I definitely have times when I need to rejuvenate and get my head back into design mode, especially when I’ve been doing a lot of analytical work for my other business. I usually spend time reading, or binge-pinning on pinterest, until I’ve been inspired to create again.
What do you see as the future of digital scrapbooking?
I hope digiscrap becomes more popular, something that everyone knows about. It was looking like that was going to happen thanks to the popularity of CM’s Storybook Creator, but with their bankruptcy problems, it isn’t gaining new converts like it was before. I’d like to see Photoshop start doing more to market Photoshop Elements as a digiscrap tool, if we could get a big company like them on board… it would definitely become a hobby in almost every household 🙂
