The hit television show Northern Exposure brought this town back to life and tourists flock to experience the locations shown on TV, but it was coal mining that created this town tucked in the Cascade Mountains in the 1800’s. In 1963 the last mine was closed and the town went into decline. In the 80’s friends took my former husband and I to Roslyn. We had never heard of it, even though it wasn’t too far from where we lived; we didn’t know what to expect. This was way before the television show. Let me just say, we knew we were strangers in town, we stuck out like sore thumbs. There was no one on the streets and a few in the Brick Tavern where we had lunch. We were thoroughly looked over, surreptitiously of course. Now it’s a totally different ball of wax. Sophia and I did a day trip to Roslyn and had a wonderful time together. Just Grandma and Granddaughter. We also went to the huge cemetery in the forest, because that really tells the story of the town. The mining disasters that claimed so many men and pandemics that took so many children’s lives. It told of a very different, hard lived kind of life, but you had a feeling it was a close knit community. So glad we made this road trip.

Notes: I manipulated the template page to suit the story I wanted to tell by moving masks, duplicating masks, deleting masks. For example, I duplicated the large background mask to bring out all the mural of the background photo. I used a PS Action on the photo of my Granddaughter and placed her at the right edged of the page, facing the mural. Solid paper 3 is the foundation. Two light leaks are blended to the large background photo.

I deleted one of the framed masks and made the supporting photos black and white so they wouldn’t compete and compliment the rest of the page.

Using a sprinkling of splatters and overlays to add a bit of interest to the page. I deleted two of the text boxes and duplicating two other boxes and rearranging them on the page, pasting in my journaling. Finally adding the heart, finished the page.
