Instead of the selective color adjustment layer, you could also try a hue/saturation layer (with the "colorize" box checked) or a solid color adjustment layer set to your desired color - either of those is more intuitive to manage than the selective color adjustment layer. The important thing is to have the mask that reveals only your black (and grey) element on your colorizing layer.
