My mom.

Journaling: These are photos of my mother taken in April, 1947. My grandmother’s note on the back of the photo reads, “ ‘Scrumptious’ as Sandy says.” My grandmother was referring to my mother’s beautiful, long, blonde hair. My mother’s hair was very straight. The waves were from braids. When the day came, many years later, to try out a stylish bob, my grandmother braided my mother’s hair and fastened the ends with bows. Ater the braids were cut, they were placed in a box in my grandmother’s cedar chest where they remain, even today.

process...
I started with artsy paper no.4 from ArtPlay Palette Capture. Solid no.3 from ArtPlay Palette Document is blended over the artsy paper (multiply). The two photos were blended together then masked. I took the forward facing photo of my mom and duplicated it twice. I enlarged the copies and moved them to either side of the focal images. One copy is set to soft light the other to pin light. Rather than go with a bow element, I decided on the butterfly. Its upper wings have the same shape as the bow in my mother's hair and this is a story (at least partly) about a time when my mother was liberated from her long hair. Two of the butterflies are on layers below my masked layers so they have a more translucent quality. The butterfly near the journaling was also reduced in opacity so that the journaling can be read through the wing (when it's a higher quality image). I took the writing from the back of the photo and split it up. The date was blended over one photo and my grandmother's note is blended down toward the journaling. The artsy transfers were used as clipping masks for the photos and to give the photos some color. I love dots! and there are a lot of them in the vitality ATs. I used the dots several times across the page changing the colors as needed. The free form lines were done with the line tool.

Thanks for looking :-)

Such sweet photos! And a wonderful story about the braids. Love the many-layered effect and the repetition of the butterflies.

The triptych effect of the forward-facing photos is awesome. Useful process notes--thanks much. And you're really working that line tool lately. Love it!

My mother had saved my braids from my first haircut. Only my sister still has them, my hair did the same thing. In fact the only Christmas photo of I when I was little is with my hair down and wavy from being in braids. Love this layout and the memories it brings back!!!!!

Very creative! Love the composition, the journaling and the wonderful photo of your mother! My mother let me go to the barber shop, yes, a barber shop, to get my long curly tresses trimmed and I came home with a DA! Sadly, I left the curls at the barber shop!
