Default Challenge #6 - CREATIVE PHOTO EDITING

All members that participate, can everyone PLEASE ensure that you read all the rules for this challenge so that you can claim your challenge points. Thank you!

Hosted by Kythe

Welcome to the October 2020 Creative Photo Editing Challenge #6. For this challenge, I want you to choose a photo and apply a sketch technique. There are a number of ways to change a photo into a soft coloured sketch but I find this method easiest for me. (I used PSE 18 to create the sketch below.)

You may use any technique to create the ‘sketch’ however, to help those who haven’t tried a sketch technique I have written a step by step tutorial below.
Sketch Technique using a stamp filter.

1. Choose a photo.
Find a photo that has a definite difference between the background and the focus. If this is your first try, it might be best to stay away from busy backgrounds. A photo with a large and clear focus is a good start. Below is the example photo I chose from Pixabay. Notice that the background is blurred. Crop as necessary or wait and use a mask later.

2. Create the sketch.

Duplicate the photo by right clicking on the photo layer and scroll down to duplicate. Click okay.

Link the two layers. (Highlight both layers then click the little grey lock to the left of each layer. The lock turns yellow when locked.)

Turn off the bottom layer by highlighting the layer and clicking on the eyeball to the left of the layer.

With the top layer highlighted, go to FILTER. (Found at the very top of the screen) Click the dropdown and scroll to SKETCH

The Sketch will open to another dropdown. Scroll to STAMP - click

A second screen will open with a black and white sketch of the original photo.
On the right, there are two sliders: Light/dark balance and Smoothness. Play with the sliders until you find the amount of black line and detail you prefer.
- Light/dark increases the amount of dark shown as you move the slider to the right.
- Smoothness decreases the amount detail as you move the slider to the left

Click OK when you are satisfied with the sketch.

In the layers panel, a black and white sketch image will appear in the top layer.

Turn on the bottom layer by clicking the eyeball.

With the top layer highlighted, play with the opacity slider to bring out a little bit of colour. How much you reduce the opacity will depend on the photo and your preference. For a different look you might wish to experiment with the drop down menu that alters the colours of an image. (Look for ‘NORMAL’ to the left of the Opacity drop down.)

At this point, you can merge the two layers or keep them linked in case you want to alter the opacity further along the way. Just make sure the two layers are always LINKED so if a change in size is needed the two layers will move together.

If you choose to use a photo mask, you will need to merge the two layers before applying the mask.

Now you are ready to create the layout.

Enjoy the challenge and have fun learning how to create a sketch.

In the forum post, please show the three changes you made so we can ‘ooh and ahh’ over the progression.

- the original photo and the sketch on one page

- the completed design page

My example using:

Manu Design Studio The Best of Times (recoloured), Meshes set 2 and Anna Aspnes Art Play Ariose

Oh, this was so much fun... I love adding a sketch effect to the photo. Here is the original photo and the one with the sketch effect applied: Fantastic!

My PSP doesn't seem to have a stamp function but I did do a sketch type effect. O this is lovely.
Whatever method used is fine by me as I know not everyone uses the same program.

Thanks for the challenge! Credits in Gallery

Thanks for the fun challenge. Couldn't make just the stamp look quite right so I added a layer with the Photocopy filter and liked that better.I don’t mind what software is used. You ended up with the correct look and that is what is important. Great picture to use.
