Default Challenge 2 – Typography (April 2014)

I think I'm losing it a little bit people! I swear I posted this yesterday, but I don't see it now! I'm so sorry it's late for you all! In any case...here's the Typography challenge for April!!

There have been a lot of times that I have played with my font size, spacing, and style in order to get out of typing more for an assignment. I have found that I've started doing this more and more with my text on my layouts to achieve the look I want. As I started investigating the principles of typography, I found out that there are names for these things! The space between lines is called "leading", the space between individual letters is called "kerning" and the distribution of a whole word is called "tracking". Here's a quick graphic for you with a link to an article explaining it in more detail.

And here are some commercial examples of type that's had the leading or kerning and tracking adjusted.

So this month, I'm challenging you try adjusting your leading or kerning or tracking. In my version of PSE, there is a simple button to change the leading. It looks like a bold "A" with an arrow leading to a smaller A. Like this:

Using this, you can spread your text lines out much like changing the line spacing on your documents.

Here's a comparison for you (*please note - on my samples, I also adjusted the size and spacing of the photo and tree):

Normal:

Decreased leading:

Increased leading:

In the "big girl" versions of Photoshop, like CS5, I bet there is a way to adjust kerning, but to be honest....when I want to adjust the spacing of individual letters, I just do it the good old fashioned way. I do it by hand! For the kerning, I make each letter a text box all on it's own and move them around. To add more space in a tracking sense, I add in spaces in between letters. (If you want to delve into how to adjust the kerning and tracking in the character panel on PS CS, here's an article you can read.) In the following example, I spread out the word "greatest" to add more of a sense of space to the word, while I adjusted the kerning individually on the word "little" to give it a compressed feeling.

Kerning/Tracking:

So this month - your challenge is to create a layout and adjust your line and letter spacing in your text. It can be in your title or in your journaling, but you need to increase or decrease your leading or kerning/tracking. If you would like to give a before and after, so we can really tell the difference, feel free.

Look at the difference between these two pages that Cindy made. I actually don't know which one I like better!

Marijke made this one:

And Sabine adjusted the tracking on this one to help make her text go across the page:

So, now that you've heard all the details and gotten some inspiration...get tracking! Or leading...or kerning.

Sara, you DID post this yesterday! I know I saw it. It sounds really good too.

I looked and sure enough I found it here: https://ozone.oscraps.com/forum/showthread.php?t=29069, not quite in the right place I think.

This was the perfect opportunity to list a few things we saw in Liverpool.
