October Challenge #4 - Creative Photo Editing

In fairness to all members that participate, can everyone PLEASE ensure that you read all the rules for this challenge so that you can claim your challenge points fairly. Thank you! :)

Hello all, and welcome to the October Creative Photo Editing Challenge!

In this months Creative Photo Editing Challenge we are going to focus on creating more contrast on a Black and White photo.
There are many ways to give your photo more contrast and drama! You can do it with an action, or a plugin. And you can do it manual in different ways in your editing program!
I will show you three very easy ways to do it manual in Photoshop.

Here you can see my original photo! Not so much contrast on it! I like to have much more contrast on this boy photo to create a typical boyish layout with it!

And here with some more contrast!

A very quick way to do it is to copy your photo, and then select that top layer and set the Blendingmode to Multiply. Create a layermask mask and now you can paint on the mask to get some of the original photo back.

A second way to do it is to create a Curves Adjustment Layer. Here you can see I created an S curve to make the black more dark and the white more light.

And a third way to do it is to create a Levels Adjustment Layer. Drag the left slider to the right, and the right slider to the left to get the same effect!

If you have a Plugin like Topaz Labs, you can go to Filter- Topaz labs-Topaz BW effects.

And I am sure that there are actions that do it for you to!

Also programs like Lightroom can do a great job on this.

I created this page with my edited photo:
Just a Boy Collection

I'm sure you can be very creative too with your beautiful high contrasted Black and White photo! Have fun!!!!

Hello, Sorry but this is my first time with a challenge and I have uploaded the layout but I don't know where to post the before BW photo?

margje 10-03-2018 11:22 AM

Hello krumZ, you must post your challenge layout here too! Use the direct link that is under the photo details on your post in the gallery! and the link that is on top of the gallery page to link to the gallery! You can post the before photo also here in the forum, but then you need to upload the photo to a host (like IMGUR) to get the image URL!
Go to the image icon and insert the URL!

Thank you Marianne. I am not one to upload personal photos to sites such as that to get a url - too much risk of them being stolen and used without permission. I am probably too cautious but you have to be in this day and age and all that is going on - I don't even share images on Facebook.

I added the before photo to my gallery and used that url - hope that is OK.

Thank you Marianne. I love digital art. After this challenge is over, I may delete the before photo. I don't mind it in the layout as it is not so big but I don't like leaving other photos out and about.

Thank you for the challenge, Marianne! I love b/w photos and love the contrasting. I used the Levels Adjustment to make my changes.
