In case you didn’t realize it, scrapbooking has trends just like fashion. Some product, technique or style is the big thing for a while and you seem to see it everywhere and then the next big thing begins to crowd it out. Back in April, Sara shared that the color trend was purple or Radiant Orchid to be precise. Now we’re moving on to some of the products you’ve been seeing or will see this year.
These trendy products can be summed up as Naturals. They’re things like cork, burlap, doilies, wood and botanical-influenced items. They can give a cozy, warm feel to a layout if you go softer like in the layout below. It incorporates doilies (one from Studio Romy stamped in brown and a piece of a white doily from Tracy Martin peeking out from the right of the photo), an aged wooden frame from Studio Romy and burlap in the form of the larger white flower in front of the bigger pic and the heart accent to the left of the bigger pic (both from Studio Romy).

Or these naturals can be…well… a little more natural or rugged as in this layout due to the simple lines and focus on a more natural look using the fun cork stars and worn cardboard heart from Tracy Martin, twig from Anna Aspnes and rough stitches, stitched frames and messy splats from Studio Romy.

Here are some great kits from the O that incorporate these trendy Naturals:
See the cute cork cloud, cutout and WA circle?
See the doily, the doily-shaped flower and the plain (natural) chipboard?
LOTS of naturals in this one from Anna!
So, grab a kit from the shop and try a few trends this weekend! And speaking of this weekend, you know what Sunday is, right? A day to celebrate that perfect combination of sometimes soft and sometimes tough and always naturally beautiful: MOM!
Yes, in a perfect childhood world you never would have had to eat your veggies before you could have dessert or get your homework done before playing or share with your sister or be nice to your annoying little brother or insert whatever made you say “Moooooommmmmm!” in a tone that always got you in trouble during junor high. Nope! Without Mom there, you would have had a cool life and been independent and in charge of your destiny and..for those of you whose idea of fun involved fire, the rowdy crowd and so on…probably doing 10-20 somewhere. Hmmmmm…
So, why not grab a gift certificate from the shop for Mom’s day to thank her for being right about all that stuff after all? Find or make a cute card and insert a note saying your gift this year is Mom’s Memories. Basically, you set aside one afternoon for a couple of weekends over the next few months. During those afternoons, you grab some of your childhood photos and ask her to tell you the stories about the photos. Record them as she shares by typing them or videoing her or recording on your phone or.. you get the idea.
Then show her some fun kits in the O shop and she can use her GC to get them. Help her download and teach her how to make a simple page. There are tons of great templates in the shop. Find a set she likes and just reuse them for tons of pages. If she’d rather not make a simple album herself, then still have her choose the kits she likes and you can use those to make the album for her, using her memories for the journaling. Title it Mom’s Memories and when it’s all done, get 2 copies printed – one for her and one for you.
And what if your Mom is not in the picture or you don’t have the best relationship? That is a part of life, too. Most likely there is another mom-like person in your life, someone who is your encourager or has helped you to get where you are. Why not make a small appreciation album for her or set up some time to scrap with her?
Meaningful memories and some fun trends – what a natural combination! Happy Scrapping!!
