It's back to school time in Austin. One of my good friends is a first grade teacher in an underserved/underprivileged school. She asked me to help her out by coming in when I can and letting the kids read to me. Something that doesn't happen at home for many of these kids. This got me thinking about my favorite childhood books. I loved the Babar series—I thought I was so smart because I could read cursive. Ha. Ha. When I help out, I'm sure I'll discover new favorites. Oh, I also designed some Dora/dinosaur bookmarks to give the kids. They turned out kinda cute—if anyone wants them, just DM me and I'll send the art.

What book was your childhood favorite?

Supplies:

MultiMedia Read No. 1

ArtsySchool No. 1

Process notes:
I love Anna’s ArtsyKardz. I use them in a variety of different ways, sometimes as a background paper. For this layout, I used a 6 x 6 No. 1 AK Knowledge and enlarged it to 12 x 12. I turned off some of the layers, creating a colorful paper with a few notebook lines. I placed the journal from MultiMedia Read and added the chart of cursive writing, using the multiply blend mode to make it look like it was printed on the page. I then added the binder element and the Barbar book cover, masking out part of the clip. I placed my illustration behind the journal and reduced its opacity. Added the book stack transfer, glasses and book outline. Brushed in some color in the book outline along with a few more stains and splatters. Added the overlay that makes this look like old-time Polaroid. Final touch was my text.

Thanks for looking!

Wonderful mid-century look -- perfect for the topic. Adore the notebook.

What terrific service you are doing. I worked in at-risk city schools for many years with kids who came from vibrant cultures, but all lacked an emphasis on books and formal education. I'm sure you'll enjoy the kids as much as they'll enjoy you. (Cool layout!)
